Why Is Learning About The Ocean Important?

Our amazing ocean covers roughly 70% of our planet, is a key player in the governing of our planet’s clean air and fresh water systems and is a major player in our food web. All of these things humans depend on to survive. Literally. So why isn’t basic ocean science (or sustainability) as commonly taught as basic biology (required in both high school and college)?? Perhaps we didn’t know enough about it before, but that’s no longer the case.

We now KNOW, our next generation will be faced with critical environmental issues…

Climate Change

Plastic Pollution

Extinction And Decreasing Food Supplies

Created by OUR actions. Present and future generations will be unfairly challenged to solve these issues in the time frame we’ve given them, unless we arm them with the information they need to make better decisions than we did.

This is always our hope for the future.

So where does one go to get a holistic understanding of the ocean’s processes and its citizens, what they do for us, how they affect us, how we connect and what we can to do to respect and protect it for future generations? We all know at least a few sites or organizations where we can find reliable, fun, up to date information on the ocean, which is exciting! But with the size of the ocean and the number of critters in it, science can tend to be species or topic specific and these studies, while insightful and wonderful, are left unconnected and spread throughout different institutions and organizations. Not to mention when you’re looking for a better alternative for something it’s hard to see through all the marketing haze (dubbed “Greenwashing”) and determine if you’re actually making a solid environmental decision or not. In today’s world, almost no one has the time to sit down and unravel this mess, or figure out what the solutions(s) are, even if everyone would like to.

My solution to this problem? ~ OceanCore! A program where the idea is to offer ocean education and sustainability practices to everyone!

Awareness challenge:

Take one day to look at the world around you and note all the places you see plastic where it shouldn’t be.

“The Ocean, and all those that call her home, have no voice that people can hear…no way to tell us they need help because their food sources are changing, their homes are crumbling, and their world is getting hot, loud and dirty!”
